I first used mediation while working with juvenile offenders.
I was impressed how my clients caught on to the
process and how
captivated they became in working out their individual differences.
At a later time, I used mediation,
while I was employed as a social worker in the public school system. By having a mediation
program readily available to students; it allowed them to develop and use their own problem-solving skills, self-determination, and
empathy, while also allowing
them to make informed decisions for themselves.
These were valuable skills that could be taken
with
them to use at other stages of their lives when faced with conflict.
After seeing first hand how the use of mediation
had helped troubled youth and take responsibility for their lives;
I then had the
opportunity
to experience how mediation had helped adults who were stuck in conflict. I began training as a mediator at
Northwestern University and
the University of Missouri. I was blessed to meet Len Riskin, while at Northwestern and he
allowed
me to study his techniques at the University of
Missouri School of Law. At the time, I was not
aware that Len was
Internationally known
for his work, so I am proud to say that I had the opportunity to train with one of the best!
Since then,
I have enjoyed guiding conflicted parties to a
solution that is acceptable to everyone, while
making a positive
impact on the lives of others.
